Obscene Binary's Top Ten Albums of 2008
I Know I Know i am a week late. But hey I finished it before my final show of the semester this Wednesday at 4pm on WUSC.
DJ ALGORITHM’S TOP TEN OF 2008.
10. Black Kids - Partie Trau Matic
What can be said about Black Kids besides it was something new at the beginning of the summer. We can hear a new but repetitive sound that becomes very distinct. Who knows how far these Kids can go.
Track Pick-“Hurricane Jane”
9. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend is genius and new. At first I thought they came out last year but nope came out at the beginning of this year. So bam they hit number nine on my chart for being innovative and very smooth.
Track Pick-“Campus”
8. Throw Me the Statue – Moonbeams
Oh Lolita, how I want to see ya. I really want to see this band continue. They are really catchy and what is the word… toe-tapping. Now they may sound simple but it is a fun simplicity that makes Throw Me The Statue fun.
Track Pick-“About To Walk”
7. Mates of State - Re-arrange Us
Mates of State is one of my favorite bands of all time. This married couple has fun upbeat (even when they are slow) songs. One of the highlights of my year was watching them on Yo Gabba Gabba. If only I had the chance to travel up to Greenville to catch these two in action.
Track Picks(Tie)-“Lullaby Haze” and “My Only Offer”
6. Buddy Guy - Skin Deep
Buddy Guy has been around for a while. I have not heard much of his stuff before Skin Deep but once this album came out and I had a sample, it caught my attention. This CD was brilliant and just what I needed to pick things up this year. It has brought soul and blues to my playlist.
Track Pick-“Lyin’ Like a Dog”
5. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Now this was one of the bands that I did not get into till last week. I finally got around to listening to them and loved the smooth sounds and voice that really shows to be a winner. Plus it is a band full of great beards. How can you beat that?
Track Pick-“White Winter Hymnal”
4. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Difficult choice on who would be in my top three. The more I think of it I still cannot make up my mind, but Jenny Lewis is one of the fantastic songstresses who has been a favorite since Rilo Kiley. With her new album it is the same wonderful lyrics and sound with her full creativity.
Track Pick-“The Next Messiah”
3. She & Him - Volume One
How I love Zooey Deschanel. Her beauty, her voice, her spirit. I love it all. And with Volume One from She & Him there is a reason to love her more. I know M. Ward is part of the band as well but I cannot help it but just focused on her. Ah Zooey
Track Pick-“You Really Got a Hold On Me”
2. Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
This band gets me. With my ADD mind that cannot stay focused on one song, Of Montreal changes its tune right in the middle of the song. It is like hey this song is amazing bam you just gave me something completely different. That was hot. And the lyrics are so awkwardly enjoyable. It just amazes me how fun it is to keep up with this band.
Track Pick-“For Our Elegant Caste”
1. Lykke Li - Youth Novels
I think I have talked about Lykke Li enough this year… Ha no I have not, Lykke Li is my favorite artist of the year. At first I did not get it just thought her single, “Little Bit” was just catchy but then the rest of the CD hit me hard. It blew my mind how a wonderful voice can mix in with fantastic beats. End of Story Lykke Li is my number one band of 2008. Who did not see that coming? Here is her performance from the MTVU Woodie Awards.
Track Picks-Hard pick but ummm….-“My Love” and “I’m Good, I’m Gone” and why not “Tonight” and others.
Other choices that did not make my cut:
- Girl Talk
- Gnarls Barkley
- Dr. Dog
- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
- Megapuss
- Los Campesinos!
Alright that is all for now. It is time to start on my Top 5 Videos and Hopefully get that up by the end of the week. I will keep updating over the break with things I will find then In the year 2009 expect my songs of the week to be posted. So Stay Tuned.
