Beck - “Suzanne” (Leonard Cohen cover)

It has been a while. A really long time since i have written something new. Well since the last original post. But I am back, new school year, new things. So let us do something quick and easy before the premiere season starts.

As I said in an earlier post, Beck has been working on something called Beck’s Record Club. Basically Beck is covering entire albums. Recently, Beck just finished covering The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico album, covering all 13 of their songs. Now, Beck has moved on from The Velvet Underground and has decided to take on Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen. The video above, is Beck’s version of “Suzanne”. But with “Suzanne”, Beck could not do it alone. Beck called in MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, and Bikini Sharpo of Little Joy. So yes this cover is very different than the original. Have a listen or two.

Speaking of covers, Obscene Binary is now just a blog since the radio show has now become The Carolina Cover-up. Playing various covers on Thursday nights 10 to Midnight on WUSC.

  • Parks and Recreation- I hope Amy Pohler does well. Well she should and she will have help as well. I expect good things.
  • Lost-Ben being judged by the mysterious smoke monster.
  • Doctor Who “Planet of the Dead” - The first of the last specials featuring David Tennant.

“Angels” - Flight of the Conchords
Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords return on Sunday January 18th and if you have not already you can catch the episode on FunnyorDie.com. But if not here it is below.

It was a good filler episode. It continues where the series left off a while back. I believe the first season ended in September of 2007. I am looking forward to the rest of the season though. Promotions for the new season of Flight of the Conchords has been airing on television that show even more potential than the premiere has shown. Now do not get me wrong

I guess this would be the start of the mid-season premieres right? Twelve or so articles based on the new and returning shows at this halfway mark. Probably. But i have yet to decide. I have already missed a few of the premieres. I watched the Scrubs premiere and the… well that is the only premiere i have watched. Not into 24 and ummm… Well what else has premiered. I believe those have been the only two. I guess i can start on this series of articles. Most of the shows that are new are reality shows and I do not watch those. Mamma’s Boys and 13: Fear is Real? Come on… There is nothing premiering that I would really want to watch till March where I am anticipating the return of Reaper. We will see where this goes. So Friday my thoughts on the new season of Scrubs. Any other suggestions place it in the comments.

Remember the radio show returns tomorrow at its new time Thursdays from 4-6 in the afternoon on WUSC. Check it out. New things coming soon.

jeffrubinjeffrubin:

This is the original version of Top That, the rap that Kenneth performed on this week’s wonderful episode of 30 Rock. It’s from 1989’s Teen Witch.

It takes about thirty seconds to get going, but it’s well worth it.

I was also quite amused at the appearance of the song on 30 Rock. You forget about something and then bam hits you like a brick. Yes a brick. And now… well that is it for this post.

Listeners of the show. I will be returning this Thursday at 4 in the afternoon. Remember the station. For the Locals it is WUSC 90.5. For the distant listenters Head to the website and find the live stream. Yeah check it. There will be music of course with the return of Bad Jokes and Random Animal Facts with a couple of new things here and there. Ought to be Good. Top That!

What Are My Top Music Video of the Year 2008?

Ah it is Monday and I am off of work and School is over, I am getting so bored waiting for the grades to come in. The anticipation is really getting to me. I hate waiting, but what is the best cure for being impatient. Viewing Music Videos.

Unlike my list for the top Albums of 2008, my top Music Videos of 2008 have no order. They just come as I see them. How long is the list? I have not a clue. The way I decide which videos are my favorite, I look at creativity and music. Creativity is my main focus though. In the past I enjoyed videos that kept my attention by being eccentric and showing beauty.

Let us start.

For The Awesome:
Golden Age - TV on the Radio

For The Artistic:
Soon We’ll Be Found - Sia

For The Future:
The Youth - MGMT

For The Posh:
Guilt - The Long Blondes

For The Nostalgic:
Kim & Jessie - M83

For The Broken Hearted:

Who’s Gunna Save My Soul Now? - Gnarls Barkley

For The Bollywood Enthusiast:
Carmensita - Devendra Banhart

For The Lovers:
Ladies of the World - Flight of the Conchords

For The Lonely Zombie:
Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs. Heath) – Crystal Castles

For The One Up To A Challenge:
Strange Times – The Black Keys

For Last Spot At A Deadline:
Paper Planes – I’m From Barcelona

For The Robots:
Roboticus - Zombies! Organize!!

Obscene Binary's Top Ten Albums of 2008

I Know I Know i am a week late. But hey I finished it before my final show of the semester this Wednesday at 4pm on WUSC.

DJ ALGORITHM’S TOP TEN OF 2008.

10. Black Kids - Partie Trau Matic
What can be said about Black Kids besides it was something new at the beginning of the summer. We can hear a new but repetitive sound that becomes very distinct. Who knows how far these Kids can go.
Track Pick-“Hurricane Jane”

9. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend is genius and new. At first I thought they came out last year but nope came out at the beginning of this year. So bam they hit number nine on my chart for being innovative and very smooth.
Track Pick-“Campus”

8. Throw Me the Statue – Moonbeams
Oh Lolita, how I want to see ya. I really want to see this band continue. They are really catchy and what is the word… toe-tapping. Now they may sound simple but it is a fun simplicity that makes Throw Me The Statue fun.
Track Pick-“About To Walk”

7. Mates of State - Re-arrange Us
Mates of State is one of my favorite bands of all time. This married couple has fun upbeat (even when they are slow) songs. One of the highlights of my year was watching them on Yo Gabba Gabba. If only I had the chance to travel up to Greenville to catch these two in action.
Track Picks(Tie)-“Lullaby Haze” and “My Only Offer”

6. Buddy Guy - Skin Deep
Buddy Guy has been around for a while. I have not heard much of his stuff before Skin Deep but once this album came out and I had a sample, it caught my attention. This CD was brilliant and just what I needed to pick things up this year. It has brought soul and blues to my playlist.
Track Pick-“Lyin’ Like a Dog”

5. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Now this was one of the bands that I did not get into till last week. I finally got around to listening to them and loved the smooth sounds and voice that really shows to be a winner. Plus it is a band full of great beards. How can you beat that?
Track Pick-“White Winter Hymnal”

4. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Difficult choice on who would be in my top three. The more I think of it I still cannot make up my mind, but Jenny Lewis is one of the fantastic songstresses who has been a favorite since Rilo Kiley. With her new album it is the same wonderful lyrics and sound with her full creativity.
Track Pick-“The Next Messiah”

3. She & Him - Volume One
How I love Zooey Deschanel. Her beauty, her voice, her spirit. I love it all. And with Volume One from She & Him there is a reason to love her more. I know M. Ward is part of the band as well but I cannot help it but just focused on her. Ah Zooey
Track Pick-“You Really Got a Hold On Me”

2. Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
This band gets me. With my ADD mind that cannot stay focused on one song, Of Montreal changes its tune right in the middle of the song. It is like hey this song is amazing bam you just gave me something completely different. That was hot. And the lyrics are so awkwardly enjoyable. It just amazes me how fun it is to keep up with this band.
Track Pick-“For Our Elegant Caste”

1. Lykke Li - Youth Novels
I think I have talked about Lykke Li enough this year… Ha no I have not, Lykke Li is my favorite artist of the year. At first I did not get it just thought her single, “Little Bit” was just catchy but then the rest of the CD hit me hard. It blew my mind how a wonderful voice can mix in with fantastic beats. End of Story Lykke Li is my number one band of 2008. Who did not see that coming? Here is her performance from the MTVU Woodie Awards.
Track Picks-Hard pick but ummm….-“My Love” and “I’m Good, I’m Gone” and why not “Tonight” and others.

Other choices that did not make my cut:

  • Girl Talk
  • Gnarls Barkley
  • Dr. Dog
  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  • Megapuss
  • Los Campesinos!

Alright that is all for now. It is time to start on my Top 5 Videos and Hopefully get that up by the end of the week. I will keep updating over the break with things I will find then In the year 2009 expect my songs of the week to be posted. So Stay Tuned.
