Super Midseason Extravaganza
It is a slow start to the mid season. Damn reality shows. Many shows do not return till the start of February and some in March. January though… we have seen some shows old and new. Many of them pretty good. We already started off with Flight of the Conchords, but a couple of other shows have made pretty good impressions so far.
Scrubs

Wait… You can do that? Change Networks? Good for them. Seriously it is great news. There is one thing that I really dislike about the television business. That is promotion. By the fourth or fifth season of Scrubs, NBC hardly played any previews or commercials to promote their show. Now in its eighth season, Scrubs has moved to ABC where it is getting high-class treatment. First ABC has been advertising Scrubs since the end of November. They have been playing older episodes on ABC.com which is fantastic because to me the video player on ABC.com is the best out there. Season Eight is the first season shot in HD which is something I really did not get why NBC did not fund. NBC was one of the first networks to make the switch to HD. But enough about this technical stuff. Scrubs has been back since the sixth of January.

With this season of Scrubs, we have seen some changes. It is still the same show that we have grown to love on NBC but again everyone has gotten older. Have you seen JD’s beard. I like it. But again Scrubs is the same. Looking back to the first season, we had those nervous interns making mistakes and learning from their mentors. Through the series, they have grown to become the mentors, teaching new interns every year. That is the great thing about this season is the new interns. Each of them bring something different to the show as well as the main characters.

This is most likely the last season of Scrubs. Many of the cast have stated they will not be returning as well as the series creator even if the series is picked up for a ninth season. There are rumours that many of the special guests from the past eight years will be appearing in the finale. To me, it feels right to make this the final season of Scrubs. ABC is giving the writers the chance to end the series right. I was a little uneasy about having JD and Elliot get back together but after last week’s episode, I am very comfortable with the return of the idea.

The United States of Tara

I was uncertain about The United States of Tara. After watching the first episode, my thoughts have changed as always. The reason that I was uncertain is because the show was written by Diablo Cody. Now do not get me wrong, I thought Juno was really good and was very well written. But I just thought it was luck that Cody received so much critical acclaim. But this series may have proven me wrong.

Here we have Tera, played by Toni Collete, A married mother of two who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. Well that is the gist of it. Now this show came from an idea from Steven Spielberg but was further developed by Diablo Cody. The great thing about The United States of Tara, is that it is focused on the entire family and how they adapt to the mother’s situation. It is known from the beginning that Tera suffers from this condition. There is no back story, the audience joins this family already in progress. There really is not need for a back story. It is just how it is. I highly recommend the show.
