Life Without Caffeine, DAY 7... or one week...

It has been a while since I have posted something new. yeah… I just have not felt it lately. Nothing seems to be inspiring me or really catching my attention. It might be that I am off caffeine or turn to other means of entertainment. Could it be depression… No… I am not the type to stay depressed. I move on. Like from this conversation. Moving on.

Fol Chen:

There is this band. This band that i played once on my radio show. They have an excellent sound and probably make it onto my i-pod in the next few weeks. I found their video late yesterday and thought. I really need to hear more of their stuff. Here is Fol Chen’s video for “Cable TV”.

Now there is nothing wrong with your computer’s Internet connection. The jumpy video is how it was produced. But with the music, we have something special. Now I cannot find much information online about Fol Chen. And I cannot say much about them since I have only heard two of their songs. A bit of an Of Montreal vibe. Check them out for yourself.

Getting in a Better Mood

There are many ways of forgetting the past and moving forward. Venting to friends, driving for hours on end. Music has cheered me up this week. Three bands have helped alot. Late of the Pier, The Bird & The Bee, and Lily Allen.

Late of the Pier

Late of the Pier has become popular in the Columbia area. Why should they not? They have an amazing album out right now titled Fantasy Black Channel. Now why did this music make my mood better? It sort of had my heart beating faster increasing my energy. I could not help having a bit of a skip in my step walking to classes. Pretty good. It made me confident that life will once again work its way out.

Bird and the Bee

The Bird & The Bee released a their new album, Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, back on January 27. I have posted plenty of things about The Bird & The Bee previously but now after two years a new album has emerged. Every track has a great quality and as my friend Will puts it, It is elevator music with lyrics. And that is what makes them great. Calming, soothing, easy to listen to. It is what I needed and a good balance with Late of the Pier.

Lily Allen

Moving on the Lily Allen. What is there to say about Lily Allen? She is unlike today’s pop-stars. She seems more down to earth and more a more rounded character. That and it seems that she mocks today’s popular music. This all can be seen in her new album, released on February 9th, It’s Not Me, It’s You. This CD is the one to make you feel like a champion. As if you could rise above everyone else and beat down your problems with a gigantic stick. Take them all down a notch just to bring up a little self esteem.

2009

I believe we are a month and 23 days into and things have been a rollercoaster. Ups and Downs. New president, new hopes, new dreams. There is so much to look for. Why not have a preview.

  • Camera Obscura new album in April titled My Maudlin Career
  • The Boy Least Likely To new album, Law of the Playground, out in March
  • The Flaming Lips new documentary on mushrooms called “Know Your Mushrooms”
  • Flight of the Conchords’ CD out on April 14th

End.

Garfunkel and Oates

Watching Scrubs the other night found me staring at a new found face. Her name was Stephanie Gooch (played by Kate Micucci) and she took interest in our favorite lawyer. I found her very pleasant. I may have a new celebrity crush. I need one to replace Zooey since she has recently gotten engaged to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab. Sigh… but there is a new face that has caught my eye.

Kate Micucci

Adorable. So after seeing Kate Micucci on Scrubs, what do I do? I look her up on Wikipedia, play the clean version of “Fuck You” on the radio, and view other things she has done. The thing I like the most is her awkward sense of humor. Looking at her past stuff, I really felt as if I could figure out more about her. Luckily there was a compilation.

During all this research, I found out she has done a lot more with music than she has with acting. First she has a solo thing going on, which is just as adorable as her acting. Myspace.

Now doing even more research regarding the song that was on Scrubs, I found out, she is part of a duo consisting of her and Riki Lindhome. They call themselves Garfunkel and Oates and together they are brilliant. Songs about love, songs about bad songs, and songs about the face you make when you receive a gift you really do not want. Here are the videos.

Catchy, Fun, Humorous. I find it very enjoyable. But I think this is a good sign. I am moving on. One celeb crush is all I need and want. Makes me want to pick up and learn how to play the ukulele. Thanks Kate Micucci.

photo This is a blog to coinside with the radio show of the same name. Obscene Binary aired Wednesday Afternoons 2-4pm on WUSC 90.5 Columbia but is now on Hiatis for the Summer. Since school has done the same and I have ventured back to my place or origin, I cannot host a summer program. Starting this Fall though, Obscene Binary will make its return, most likely at a different time, this fall. Starting in June though as an attempt to keep up with new music and to keep myself from falling farther into boredom, I will be posting my artist of the week kind of deal. Awesome right? Well keep your eyes open for the first artist coming the first week of June. That is only less than two weeks. Also listen to WUSC this summer. There are still some great shows going on. It is so easy to find to find on the webpage. So till June.
