Julian Casablancas - “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”(Saturday Night Live cover)

I know, it has been a while since my last real post. And it may be a while till another original post. I may work this way until the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays, Julian Casablancas new album, Phrazes for the Young, hit shelves this week. This lead vocalist and songwriter of The Strokes, now has his own solo album. Everybody cheering? Good. Well I bring with this post today a bonus track offered on Itunes that you can listen to here as well as other blogs on the net. It is a cover of the song “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”.

See, back in the early 2000’s, there was a little known show called Saturday Night Live. On this show, we could watch a group of comedians put on sketches as well as hear what the popular music of the day was. It has been around for a while. Well luckily for us, Julian Casablancas brings an old Christmas song from this show back into the spot light. Originally, the song was performed by Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon (with Chris Katan and Tracy Morgan dancing in the background). Now we have a brand new interpretation for you to enjoy. Here is the original if you wish to view it yourself. Notice the differences?

It has been a while. A really long time since i have written something new. Well since the last original post. But I am back, new school year, new things. So let us do something quick and easy before the premiere season starts.

As I said in an earlier post, Beck has been working on something called Beck’s Record Club. Basically Beck is covering entire albums. Recently, Beck just finished covering The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico album, covering all 13 of their songs. Now, Beck has moved on from The Velvet Underground and has decided to take on Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen. The video above, is Beck’s version of “Suzanne”. But with “Suzanne”, Beck could not do it alone. Beck called in MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, and Bikini Sharpo of Little Joy. So yes this cover is very different than the original. Have a listen or two.

Speaking of covers, Obscene Binary is now just a blog since the radio show has now become The Carolina Cover-up. Playing various covers on Thursday nights 10 to Midnight on WUSC.

The Carpenters’ version of this song is up there with Hey Jealousy and When You Were Mine (Album Version) (Cyndi Lauper version) of songs I could never get tired of listening to.
