Beck - “Suzanne” (Leonard Cohen cover)

It has been a while. A really long time since i have written something new. Well since the last original post. But I am back, new school year, new things. So let us do something quick and easy before the premiere season starts.

As I said in an earlier post, Beck has been working on something called Beck’s Record Club. Basically Beck is covering entire albums. Recently, Beck just finished covering The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico album, covering all 13 of their songs. Now, Beck has moved on from The Velvet Underground and has decided to take on Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen. The video above, is Beck’s version of “Suzanne”. But with “Suzanne”, Beck could not do it alone. Beck called in MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, and Bikini Sharpo of Little Joy. So yes this cover is very different than the original. Have a listen or two.

Speaking of covers, Obscene Binary is now just a blog since the radio show has now become The Carolina Cover-up. Playing various covers on Thursday nights 10 to Midnight on WUSC.

Songs on Repeat During Summer 2009

I have been driving a lot this summer through the upstate South Carolina. There was a couple of weeks that my radio was out but NPR was a big help, especially around the hours of 7 - 9. But anyway, here are a few songs that when they came on my ipod or the radio, I could not get enough of.

Metric - “Gimme Sympathy”

They Might Be Giants - “Birdhouse In Your Soul”

God Help the Girl (Cathrine Ireton) - “God Help the Girl” (More on this later)

Belle and Sebastian - “Funny Little Frog”

Elvis Costello - “Sulfur to Sugarcane”

Just Consider this a Hiatus for a Couple Weeks Longer

Due to an infinate amount of work, (9 hours a day for seven days a week…) I have placed this blog on an extended hiatus. I mean I have been way too busy to come up with new ideas. If this Canada thing works out, I will probably have a post then. We will see. For now, here are a few things that I have become addicted too over the summer.

  • Coffee - I am not a big coffee drinker, but for being the type of guy who falls asleep after mid-night, waking up at six in the morning can be difficult. Thanks to coffee, I have been able to make it through the mornings. Two packets of cream and loads and loads of sugar please.
  • Mountain Dew - Same as the coffee except it works for the afternoons. It helps with long boring drives. That and there is something in it with an addictive quality. I do not know what it is. Could it be what makes up the dew?
  • Six Feet Under - Thanks to the public library, I have been able to catch up with movies and television shows. Six Feet Under is great and I am trying to finish the entire series before the end of summer. Almost finished with season three and only have a week or two to finish the rest. There are so many great and reconizable actors in it as well, many who are there for just one episode but it is like ‘hey, is that the person from ____________’.
  • Dexter - I think this goes along with Six Feet Under because they both have Michael C. Hall in them. It is interesting to see him go from a funeral home director who is gay to a dark humored serial killer. Very diverse. Now in Dexter, the story line is fantastic and since Showtime is showing two episodes every Sunday night, I am getting caught up pretty quickly.
  • Scott Pilgrim - Read my earlier blog. Still working on reading the entire series and following the movie blog. The cast is growing and the scenes are looking spectacular. Along with the Scott Pilgrim blog, i am also following Edgar Wright’s blog as well. He is such a tease giving a single picture each day of his Scott Pilgrim film along with other things from his life.

I think that is a good list to get through this dry spell. Trust me, once work is though with and I get back into a good pattern, more updates will come. Expect small posts till then.

Superstar-Sonic Youth (Carpenters cover)

The Carpenters’ version of this song is up there with Hey Jealousy and When You Were Mine (Album Version) (Cyndi Lauper version) of songs I could never get tired of listening to.   I bought the If I Were a Carpenter album in the 12th grade specifically for this cover, but never knew until moments ago that there is a beautiful video to go along with this song.

Going To Be Honest Here...

That last post I made, not the one about the public library, the one about teen dramas, sucked… I do not regret the post, just feel it was not my best. Not even close to good. Yeah… so next post will be better. Promise. Just need to figure out what the next topic will be.

Oh while we are being honest… this tumblarity thing sucks. If I stay at zero who cares..

They have some critically acclaimed stuff too. Loads of DVDs and it is all for free! Free I tell you Free… except the gas you need to get there. And the bit taken from your taxes. Also if you are late returning something…
