Basement Jaxx (Ft. Lightspeed Champion) - “My Turn”

Yes I know I do not post much anymore. Just feeling less inspired lately. It is all kind of bland right now. Enough about me though. What about the video I just posted?

Well back in 2007 Lightspeed Champion released Falling off the Lavender Bridge, which was one of my favorite albums of 2007. It was great because Dev Hynes, the lead singer and songwriter for the band, had mixed amazing lyrics with a simple flowing sound. It also had a great cover of “Flesh Failures” from the musical Hair. But it has  almost been three years since their last release. But we are in luck. Not only did Dev Hynes collaborate with Basement Jaxx to create the video above, but the long awaited second album is expected in February, this one titled Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You. I have yet find any tracks from this album yet. But in the meantime, we have Dev Hynes’s side-project Blood Orange.

Julian Casablancas - “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”(Saturday Night Live cover)

I know, it has been a while since my last real post. And it may be a while till another original post. I may work this way until the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays, Julian Casablancas new album, Phrazes for the Young, hit shelves this week. This lead vocalist and songwriter of The Strokes, now has his own solo album. Everybody cheering? Good. Well I bring with this post today a bonus track offered on Itunes that you can listen to here as well as other blogs on the net. It is a cover of the song “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”.

See, back in the early 2000’s, there was a little known show called Saturday Night Live. On this show, we could watch a group of comedians put on sketches as well as hear what the popular music of the day was. It has been around for a while. Well luckily for us, Julian Casablancas brings an old Christmas song from this show back into the spot light. Originally, the song was performed by Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon (with Chris Katan and Tracy Morgan dancing in the background). Now we have a brand new interpretation for you to enjoy. Here is the original if you wish to view it yourself. Notice the differences?

Do you know who Marcel Proust is?

Yeah. French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads. But he’s also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he uh… he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of his life, ‘cause they made him who he was. All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didn’t learn a thing. So, if you sleep until you’re 18… Ah, think of the suffering you’re gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don’t get better suffering than that.

Let us Look: At Modern Family

Modern Family, ah Modern Family. What can be said about a show that explores the life of three different families in this fake documentary style comedy? Well a lot can be said. All good though. The good defiantly outweighs the bad on this one. Well that has how all my reviews have been. Good over bad. So I really cannot say anything that I have found bad about this new TV series.

Modern Family

The Good:

It is all really good. I enjoyed the little jokes here and there. It was very natural moving show. Families being, well families. It has a deeper aspect though. All three families are connected. The older man who married the younger woman is the father of a parent in the other two families. It is not called Modern Families it is Modern Family, showing that aspect of how the idea of a modern family has changed over the past fifty years.

This revelation at the end that each of the families are connected gives the show plenty of available storylines in the future of the series. We have the father who is dealing with his son’s sexuality, the nuclear family dealing with children going through changes, and the self confidence needed to be two dads raising an adopted child in our ever changing society.

So in the end Modern Family, has beaten out the other premieres I was excited for. Flash Forward is tonight but due to the Carolina Cover-Up tonight on WUSC 90.5fm at ten to midnight. I will be pre-occupied and will have to give my full analysis sometime in the next few days. Till then check out the radio show!

Let us Look: Community

Community has had a lot of push lately and not just on NBC or The Soup. Adverts for Community has been shown on Comedy Central, Adult Swim, MTV, and a load of other networks. The pilot episode has also been shown on the Facebook fan page, and as downloadable content on the Playstation 3. But with all this push for this new NBC show, is it worth the hype. My answer: Yes.

Community NBC

When I heard that the pilot episode of Community was available on Facebook, I jumped right on it. There were a few problems with the player (not allowing me to watch the ending till a few days later). but the player problems do not change my outlook for the entire program.

The Good:

The plot to me is original. The idea of following a group of students in a community college seems new to me. While other shows have been looking at high school or middle aged people, Community changes that aspect. Now when a college is used as a plot, broadcast television shows hit a wall. It is hard to show a real college life on the small screen. The limited use of sex, drugs, and alcohol can destroy a reality of a college based show. On Community though, we look at a community college where things are drastically different then a state school or university. Community does not need alcohol, drugs, or sex to relate to the plot. Instead it has a great cast of characters each with a reason to go to a community college.

Chevy Chase is back on television. Even though Chevy is not the main actor for the series, he still brings the funny. Lame line, I know. But Chevy’s character is so absurd and strange, it is the right balance next to Joel McHale’s lead.

The Bad:

It was good but not great. The pilot episode was enjoyable, the only problem was that it lacked content. I understand how a series would not want to throw all its material into one episode but much of the pilot episode has been shown on previews. I was hoping for something new that we have not been shown on the adverts. But I have a long lasting hope for this series. I want to see where it goes and how it will end up. I can see where the pilot is only a small start to a series that can become large. Community airs tonight (September 17th) on NBC.
